The price of sending a pallet from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast depends on a handful of things you can mostly control. Here is what carriers look at, and how to get the best price.
1. Pallet size and weight
Pallet freight is usually priced per pallet space. A standard space is a 1.2 × 1.2 m pallet, up to about 2.0 m high and 1,000 kg. Freight that is taller, wider, heavier or overhangs the pallet takes more space and costs more. See pallet sizes in Australia.
2. How many pallets you send
The more pallets in one consignment, the less each one costs. A single pallet carries the full cost of a pickup and a delivery. Ten pallets share it. If you can group orders into one consignment, you save.
3. Where it is collected and delivered
Pickups in central and northern Brisbane and deliveries to the main coastal centres are usually the most efficient. Outer suburbs, hinterland towns and island areas take longer to reach and may be serviced on set days. Our service areas page shows every suburb and how often we service it.
4. Loading and unloading
If there is a forklift or dock at both ends, loading is quick. If not, the truck needs a tailgate (a hydraulic lifting platform), which usually costs extra. See tailgate delivery explained.
5. Waiting time
Carriers allow a short time to load and unload, then charge for waiting. Have the freight ready, wrapped and labelled, and make sure someone is there to receive it.
6. The fuel levy
A fuel levy is added to the freight charge and moves with diesel prices. Read what a fuel levy is, or try the fuel levy calculator.
7. One-off or regular
Regular senders and account holders usually pay less per pallet than one-off senders, because the carrier can plan for the volume. If you send most weeks, ask about an account.
How to get the best price
- Give accurate dimensions and weights when you ask for a quote. Carriers re-measure, and under-declared freight is charged at the actual size.
- Stack and wrap freight square to the pallet, with nothing hanging over the edges.
- Combine orders into fewer, fuller consignments.
- Book ahead rather than on the day.
- Tell us about forklifts and access at both ends, so the right truck is sent the first time.
