Fuel levy calculator
Work out a freight fuel levy from the base and current fuel prices. Use it to check an invoice or to set your own levy.
How a fuel levy works
Carriers keep their base rates fixed and add a fuel levy that follows the price of diesel. When fuel rises above the base price built into the rates, the levy rises. When it falls, the levy falls.
Fuel levy % = (current price − base price) ÷ base price × fuel share.
For example, with a $1.50 base, diesel at $1.95 and a 30% fuel share, the levy is 9%. On a $200 freight charge that is $18.
This calculator does not show any carrier’s own levy. Your All Freight Carrying levy is shown on every quote and invoice.

Questions
Fuel levy FAQs
How do I calculate a fuel levy?
Fuel levy % = (current fuel price − base fuel price) ÷ base fuel price × the share of running costs that is fuel. If the current price is at or below the base, the levy is zero.
What fuel share should I use?
Use your carrier’s figure if you know it. For road freight, fuel is commonly between 25% and 35% of running costs.
Should I deduct the fuel tax credit?
Only if your carrier does. Heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes on public roads can claim it; vans under 4.5 tonnes generally cannot. The ATO sets the rate, which usually changes each February and August.
Is this your actual fuel levy?
No. This is a general calculator for checking any carrier’s levy. Your All Freight Carrying levy is shown on every quote and invoice.
